Comm Media PhD candidate Lori Smith Roles recently published a book review in Popular Culture Studies Journal.
Her review of Abortion in Popular Culture: A Call to Action describes the editors’ thoughtful, organized approach to how we communicate reproductive freedom, or lack thereof, in popular culture. The book focuses on TV shows, social media campaigns, and other popular communication channels to help reveal how our culture discusses reproductive freedom. It touches on questions such as: Who wants to be able to have an abortion? How do we as a society defend or reject a person’s right to bodily autonomy in the context of our cultural environments?
These questions are woven through the storylines of various popular media, and the text aims to uncover some of the realities of our cultural understanding of abortion and reproductive justice amidst the Supreme Court’s overturn of Roe v. Wade.
