IUP Collaborating with Indiana Borough to Help Improve Community Health in National Pilot Project

Indiana University of Pennsylvania students and faculty are working with Indiana Borough on a national pilot program to help create stronger and more informed community health, especially in rural areas.

IUP Accounting Program Earns Prestigious AACSB Accreditation

Indiana University of Pennsylvania has earned accounting accreditation for its Department of Accounting and Information Systems in the Eberly College of Business. IUP is the only public university in Pennsylvania and one of only five colleges and universities in Pennsylvania to achieve this recognition.

Record Number of Alumni Attend Student Accounting Association 2022 Recognition Dinner

On April 28, 2022, the IUP Student Accounting Association set another attendance record of 200 at its annual Recognition Dinner held at the Rustic Lodge in Indiana, Pennsylvania. The 200 people in attendance included 92 accounting professionals (81 of whom were IUP alumni) from 50 companies; 12 finance majors and 70 accounting majors; seven high school students; and 19 faculty and administrators.

On October 14, 2021, the Student Accounting Association held its third meeting of the fall semester with guest speaker Susan Cosper ’92 (BS, accounting).

The Student Accounting Association held its first in-person meeting since March 2020. Over 60 accounting students attended.

On September 9, 2021, the Student Accounting Association held its first meeting of the fall semester with guest speakers from PNC in Pittsburgh, including alumni Kate Bedont ’18, Matthew DeCesare ’20, and Luke Hollander ’20.

Student Accounting Association Makes $500 Donation to Four Footed Friends Animal Shelter

On September 10, 2021, the IUP Student Accounting Association (SAA) made a $500 donation of pet food, cat litter, cleaning products, and office supplies to Four Footed Friends (FFF), a non-profit animal shelter in Indiana, PA. FFF houses stray cats and dogs from the surrounding communities and provides veterinary care, rehabilitation services, and training to the animals.

On April 12, 2021, the Student Accounting Association held its final virtual Zoom meeting of the spring semester with guest speakers and CPAs Tia Gamler ’03, vice president of finance at Rotating Machinery Services, Inc. and Steve Bruckner ’06, vice president of finance at CD Industrial, LLC.

On March 18, 2021, the Student Accounting Association held its fourth meeting of the Spring semester with guest speaker Brittany Jellison, a campus recruiter, and IUP alumnus Dave Bluemling, a tax partner for BKD CPAs and Advisors, Pittsburgh office.

Guest Speaker Maloney Speaks to Student Accounting Association

On March 3, 2021, the Student Accounting Association held its third meeting of the spring semester with guest speaker Susan Maloney, the firm director of the national public accounting firm Baker Tilly, Pittsburgh office. Accompanying her was Lauren Cattell, who is an assurance associate.

SAA Hosts Alumni Speaker Lucas and Others

On February 17, 2021, the Student Accounting Association held its second meeting of the spring semester with guest speaker Todd Lucas ’02 (accounting), a senior audit manager at Schneider Downs’ Pittsburgh office.  Accompanying him were IUP alumni Ed Friel ’88 (shareholder), Jim Yard ’93 (shareholder), Laria Moore ’19 (staff II member), and Ed Kremmel ’16 (senior auditor).

Student Accounting Association Makes Third Donation to IUP Food Pantry and Help Center

On February 1, 2021, the IUP Student Accounting Association made its third nonperishable food and toiletries donation to the IUP Food Pantry and Help Center, located in room G-12 at the Suites on Pratt. The donation was carried out by SAA Community Service Chair Logan Stear and Vice President of Finance Brandon Boyer. The Food Pantry provides free food and toiletries to IUP students in need.

Alumnus Oshurak Speaks to Student Accounting Association

The Student Accounting Association held its final meeting of the fall 2020 semester via Zoom on Wednesday, December 2. The guest speaker was Charles (Chuck) Oshurak, partner with the regional public accounting firm Arnett Carbis Toothman in their Pittsburgh office. Oshurak graduated from IUP in 1999 with a bachelor of science degree with a major in accounting.

Alumni Conrad ’87 and McCullough ’15 Speak at Student Accounting Association Meeting

On November 12, 2020, the Student Accounting Association hosted a Zoom meeting with guest speakers from three areas of the accounting profession—independent wealth management, internal auditing, and public accounting. The speakers included Vic Conrad ’87 and Matthew McCullough ’15.

Student Accounting Association Makes Donation to IUP Food Pantry

On November 4, 2020, the IUP Student Accounting Association community service chair, Samantha Weaver, and vice president Robert Kanick went grocery shopping, spending $541.02 on 256 nonperishable food items and toiletries which were donated to the IUP Food Pantry and Help Center.

On October 20, 2020, the Student Accounting Association hosted a Zoom meeting with guest speakers from KPMG’s Pittsburgh office. The guest speakers, both senior audit associates with KPMG, included alumni Alicia Fulmer and Sarah Zbur ’16.

The Student Accounting Association held a virtual meeting via Zoom on October 5, 2020, featuring guest speaker Christy Pipes, managing director at Deloitte in their Tampa, Florida, office.

Eberly Features MBA Student Tessa Matulis

Tessa is from Bucks County, Pennsylvania which is roughly 45 minutes from Philadelphia. She learned about IUP when a high school guidance counselor mentioned that a representative for IUP was coming for instant decision day.

SAA Hosts Accounting Career Day

On September 16, 2020, the Student Accounting Association held their annual Career Day, a career fair geared toward accounting majors. The SAA faculty advisor, Kim Anderson, and Jan Shellenbarge, from IUP’s Career and Professional Development Center, worked together in organizing this event.

On September 10, 2020, the Student Accounting Association held its third meeting of the semester with guest speakers from BDO. The guest speakers included Heath Winsheimer ’95 (accounting), assurance partner; Ben Geraud ’17 (accounting), experienced tax associate; and Lindsay Fisher, campus recruiter.

Alumni from PNC Speak to Student Accounting Association

On August 27, 2020, the SAA hosted its first meeting of the fall semester virtually via Zoom. Guest speakers from PNC gave students advice and informed them of the different functional areas of employment at PNC. The speakers included Brady Wise ’95, Samantha Frye ’19, and Matt DeCesare ’20.

Student Accounting Association Fall 2017 Speed Networking Event

On November 2, 2017, IUP’s Student Accounting Association teamed up with the Institute of Internal Auditors and Pennsylvania Institute of CPAs to host a speed networking event. This first-time event for the SAA was held to provide the 35 accounting majors in attendance the opportunity to improve networking skills, build relationships with professionals, and learn about various accounting career paths. Twenty-five professionals from 13 different companies attended the event, including bank personnel, public accounting firm representatives, FBI agents, and a sole practitioner.

Eberly Features Junior Accounting Major Kanick

This week we meet Bob Kanick, a junior at IUP who is majoring in accounting as part of the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology’s Business Honors program. Bob is the vice president of the Student Accounting Association, a member of the Phi Gamma Nu Business Fraternity, and a student worker in the Eberly College Dean’s Office. He currently is working as a credit analyst intern at First Commonwealth Bank.

Senior Kumetis Selected for 2020 Women’s Leadership Award

The Eberly College of Business and Information Technology participated as a sponsor for the IUP President’s Commission on the Status of Women and Women’s and Gender Studies program this year to recognize women for their outstanding leadership, service, academic excellence, and community contributions on and off campus.

Spikner ’98, Exelon Director of Corporate Accounting, Speaks to SAA

On November 13, 2018, the Student Accounting Association welcomed Pamela Spikner as its guest speaker. Spikner, a 1998 IUP alumnus with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting, spoke before a group of 82 accounting majors. Spikner was a student in Kim Anderson’s auditing course during the spring 1998 semester.
