What is a CMS?

  • There are many different types of content management systems from which to choose. After an exhaustive study by a committee consisting of faculty and staff members, the university chose to invest in the services of Ciber, Inc., an international company that will implement Ektron, a content management system that is used at many universities across the country.

    A CMS manages the content of a web site, allowing the content manager or author, who may not know HTML, to manage the creation, modification, and removal of content from a web site without needing the expertise of a technical expert. Features include format management, revision control, and indexing, search, and retrieval.

    But, still, you're wondering what a CMS will do for you...

    • The Content Management System (CMS) will separate content from design, allowing you to be responsible for the information about which you are an expert. But, you no longer will have the burden of struggling with formatting.
    • You won't need to be logged in at IUP. Because it will be web-based, users can make changes from anywhere there is an Internet connection (perhaps you'll think about updating your pages during your European tour).
    • It will allow for certain core information to be stored and maintained centrally but displayed in multiple places. Example: official course descriptions will be stored and maintained centrally but could be displayed on many department sites. Department maintainers would not be burdened with updating those. Only the official maintainer of that information would do so, which would ensure accuracy.
    • The CMS will allow us to date material, so that when it expires, it will be removed from view.
    • It will automatically update links when addresses change, so we don't experience broken links.
