Make Sure Your Website Is Ready before Investing Time in Social Media

  • Social media—services such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIncan help you market your department. They can also take valuable resources away from strategies that may be more effective.

    We are not saying that you should not use social media as part of your marketing strategy. Many IUP departments are already using social media (you can see a list at IUP’s Social Media page). But before you get started, you do need to make sure you understand why you want to use social media, what it can or can’t do, and the amount of time it will take to use it effectively.

    While a full discussion of effective social media strategies is beyond the scope of this guide, here are some things to consider before starting a social media campaign:

    • Your website probably gets more visitors than your social media presence will.
    • Search engines are more likely to lead users to regular websites rather than social media sites.
    • Many social media sites require an account to access content fully. Even if the account is free, this places a barrier between you and your site visitors.
    • Users of many social media sites expect real-time interaction. If they ask a question, they expect an answer almost immediately—even if it’s late at night or on a weekend.
