Autumn brings cooler weather, falling leaves, and one of the most fun holidays of the year: Halloween. Long seen as a holiday for just kids, nowadays you can find all ages dressing up and enjoying this spooky season.
IUP Emergency Management has some tips for students to enjoy a Halloween that’s safe and fun!
Students who find themselves out this Halloween should do the following:
- If you walk alone, always be alert of your surroundings. Call IUP Police at 724-357-2141 for a campus escort if you feel unsafe.
- Whether walking alone or in a group, try to avoid dark or poorly lit areas whenever possible.
- Remember that the Blue light emergency phones can be used to contact IUP Police directly just by pressing the button, and an officer will be dispatched to the location.
- Watch out for your friends and others, whether outside or at a party – be aware of your friends’ whereabouts and try not to leave them unattended.
- If you have a drink, know where it is coming from, and do not leave it unattended.
- Avoid playing pranks that can be perceived as threatening.
- Trust your instincts – if something doesn’t feel right, get yourself out of the situation as soon as possible.
- Don’t hesitate to call IUP Police to report suspicious or criminal activity. Remember, if you see something, say something. We also have an anonymous reporting form on our web page.
- Don’t drink and drive
Costumes are arguably one of the best parts of Halloween. You can transform yourself into anyone and anything for a night and live vicariously through it. That said, practicality should also factor in what you wear for Halloween. Dressing for the weather, being able to move and walk, and masks that don’t obstruct your vision, are all factors that should play a part in choosing your costume.
There are plenty of safe ways to have some Halloween fun. Follow these safety tips and take the proper precautions to keep yourself and others safe this Halloween.
