A studnet listens to her professor in a Spanish class.

There is a growing need for multilingual individuals in the workplace, and the Certificate in Spanish provides an opportunity for students to earn an internationally recognized credential in a foreign language with fewer classes than a minor. Many of our students are able to test out of one or more of the required classes depending on their previous experience with the language.

The Certificate in Spanish is an 18-credit program consisting of SPAN 101, 102, 201, 220, and 230, so for students with no background in the language that would mean five semesters or coursework until completion. Up to 12 out of the 18 credits can be waived for students with prior language experience who place out of one or more of the required courses. In order to qualify for the Certificate, students must take at least six credits of Spanish courses at IUP and also take the Oral Proficiency Interview by computer (OPIc), which is offered towards the end of each fall and spring semester.

The Oral Proficiency Interview by computer is administered through Language Testing International, an affiliate of the American Council on the Testing of Foreign Languages. The OPIc provides students with an internationally recognized proficiency rating. By receiving the Certificate in Spanish, students will add an extra credential to their transcript that will distinguish them from their peers.

The certificate is focused explicitly on speaking and writing. For more in-depth language classes and courses that cover cultural, historical, and literary content, see the Spanish minor.
