Does Research Support Public Perceptions of the Battered Woman?

  • Irene Frieze, PhD

This presentation will first outline the common perceptions of the battered woman, and then describe some of the research done on intimate partner violence.  There is evidence that these perceptions are sometimes supported, but that partner violence occurs in many other patterns as well.  There is also evidence that in some cases, women are the violent partner.  Also discussed will be the widespread use of low levels of violence in dating relationships.
