Invisible Damage: The Victimization of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Children, Youth, and Adults

  • Anthony R. D'Augelli, PhD

This presentation will describe the status of the LGBT population in the maltreatment literature, and suggest factors leading to their invisibility. A human development model incorporating individual, family, and community influences on expressions of sexual and gender identity will provide the foundation for a review of the evidence of victimization, with an emphasis on LGBT children and youth. Findings from meta-analyses of child and adolescent physical and sexual abuse of LGBT youth will be presented. It will be argues that the victimization of this population occurs at many levels, from the proximal trauma of family rejection to the distal distress resulting from the lack of institutional protection.
