IUP Music Professor Jack Stamp had the premiere of his “Five Songs from the Hills” for soprano, baritone, and wind ensemble at East Tennessee State University. It was conducted by IUP alumnus Dr. Christian Zembower, director of Bands at ETSU.

The work was commissioned to celebration the one hundredth anniversary of East Tennessee State University. It is based on five folksongs from the region: On Top of Old Smokey, Barbara Allen, Old Dan Tucker, Bury Me Beneath the Willow, and The Devil and the Farmer’s Wife.

The university opened its doors on October 10, 1910. The premiere was exactly one hundred years later.
