International Tea Time, Study Abroad Fair, and More During International Education Week

Activities in celebration of International Education Week (IEW) will take place the week of October 10–14, 2011. These activities are sponsored by IUP’s Office of International Education in collaboration with the Lively Arts.

Mi Esperenza sale of homemade handbags, wallets, jewelry, and scarves will be held during all daytime events Monday through Thursday. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to the educational, financial, and spiritual development of women living in extreme poverty in Honduras.

All events are free unless otherwise noted and open to the public.

International Education Week is a joint national initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education.

Monday, October 10

  • IEW Luncheon and International Photo Exhibit: 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. Folger Hall, Crimson Event Center.
    Free food and music for all. Attendees can vote for their favorite photo from photos on display for a People’s Choice Award. All photos will be then placed in the Commonplace Coffeehouse for a two-month photo exhibit.
  • Six O’Clock Series:  Faisal Alam: “Hidden Voices: The Lives of LGBT Muslims,” 6:00 p.m., HUB, Ohio Room. Cosponsored by GLBT Commission, Office of International Education, Pride Alliance, and Religious Studies.

Tuesday, October 11

  • Study Abroad Fair: 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. HUB, Ohio Room. Come learn about the wide range of opportunities to study overseas. Students can obtain information and talk to representatives and alumni bout IUP reciprocal exchanges, affiliated programs, faculty-led programs, and overseas volunteer and service-learning opportunities.
  •  The Lively Arts: Jose Franch-Ballester Clarinet, 8:00 p.m., Sutton Hall, Gorell Recital Hall. Tickets available at the HUB. From Spain, this stunning and multi-award-winning clarinetist is well on his way to being one of the world’s finest classical chamber artists, and will perform a work with IUP faculty member David Martynuik.

Wednesday, October 12

  • International Tea Time: 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. HUB, Susquehanna Room. Observe a Chinese tea ceremony demonstration, and visit ten to fifteen country booths serving snacks and beverages from around the world. Free and open to all.

Thursday, October 13

  • International Women’s Breakfast: “Women’s Health,” 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. HUB, Monongahela Room. RSVP required.

Friday, October 14

  • U.S. Citizenship Ceremony. 11:00 a.m., Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex, Toretti Auditorium. IUP is hosting a U.S. citizenship ceremony for approximately one hundred individuals in the surrounding area. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in Pittsburgh, Pa. Open to the public.

Events are funded by the OIE and IUP Student Activity Fee.
