Music alumni from the 1950s to the 2000s will return to campus this weekend for the annual jazz alumni reunion.
The weekend features performances by current students who make up the IUP Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Professor Kevin Eisensmith '78, and IUP Jazz Band, under the direction of Professor Keith Young. The performances take place Saturday, November 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center's Fisher Auditorium. Tickets for this concert, $7.00 or $6.00 with I-Card, are available at the HUB ticket window and will be available one hour before the performance at the door.
The concert features Don Aliquo, Jr., who attended IUP and is now on the faculty of Middle Tennessee State University. Aliquo has released five solo requordings. He has recently recorded and/or performed in concert with Gary Burton, Greg Osby, Rufus Reid, Pete Christlieb, Scott Robinson, Jeff Watts, and Marvin Stamm.
The weekend culminates with the Jazz Alumni Band concert, which will take place Sunday, November 6, at 2:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium. No tickets are required for admission. Gary Bird, retired professor, will return to conduct the band. Bird, who currently lives in Wisconsin, established the IUP Jazz Band--a second jazz performance group--in 1977 and directed it for ten years. He then served as director of the Jazz Ensemble for another ten years. The alumni concert is presented in memory of Daniel DiCicco, a member of IUP's Class of 1954 and who served on the music faculty for thirty three years. He died in 2009.
The alumni band includes alumni from the 1950s to the 2000s and two sets of father-son alumni musicians.
