The featured clinician for the weekend will be Nyela Basney, director of Orvieto Musica. Founded in 1994, Orvieto Musica is an international chamber music festival presented each year in the stunningly beautiful 12th-century Italian town of Orvieto. Musicians come together from many countries to perform in medieval churches, outdoor piazzas, “jewel-box” theaters, restored castles, and small-town Orvieto settings. Director and founder Nyela Basney leads the three-week festival that comprises daily chamber music coachings, rehearsals, and public concerts.

Nyela Basney is currently artistic director and conductor of the Allegro Chorale and Orchestra in Texas. She has also conducted the Chamber Opera Chicago, appeared as guest conductor with the Springfield (Mass.) Symphony Orchestra, and has recently worked with the Toledo Symphony and Virginia Symphony in community concerts. She is associate conductor with the El Paso Opera, and, as associate conductor of the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, Basney conducted over 60 concerts a season throughout northwest Louisiana. Since 1982, she has provided professional role preparation and musicianship training for singers in more than 55 roles from 25 operas.

Basney’s appearance at IUP will provide information about the festival to other trumpeters, along with pianists, vocalists, and string players. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about Orvieto Musica and to audition for consideration for attendance at future festivals.

Kevin Eisensmith and David Ferguson, trumpet professors at IUP, will present a recital of music for trumpet and other instruments on Friday evening, February 10. Assisting will be Sandy Rubright, an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Music, along with Matthew Baumer, professor of Music History, and Jack Stamp, chair of the Department of Music. Basney will accompany Eisensmith on a work they performed together in Orvieto in June 2011 when he, along with five IUP trumpet students, attended the Orvieto Music Festival.

All events will be held in Gorell Hall and are free and open to the general public.
