As the next event for the inaugural season of the Ovations! series, the Lively Arts at IUP will present Mnozil Brass. Based in Vienna, Austria, the Indiana stop is one of only four U.S. engagements for this worldwide touring brass septet.
The performance will be held Thursday, March 29, 2012, at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts Center.
Mnozil Brass was founded in 1992 at Josef Mnozil’s Vienna tavern, and has become so well-known in concert circles that the band now holds more than 120 concerts a year across the globe. Their other U.S. engagements this tour include the University of Kansas, Louisiana State University, and McNeese State University, also in Louisiana.
Mnozil is adeptly able to convince the audience that playing music is not just serious business. Moving from pop to classical to rock, the performance is filled with musical and comic wizardry. Imagine the energy of the Spike Jones Band, the humor of Victor Borge, and the parody of Weird Al Yankovic, and you have Mnozil.
The band faces every challenge head-on, proudly proclaiming, “No tone is too high for us, no lip is too hot, and no music is too inferior.”
The ensemble consists of seven members, including Thomas Gansch, Robert Rother, Roman Rindberger, Leonhard Paul, Gerhard Füssl, Zoltan Kiss, and Wilfried Brandstötter. Wherever these seven musicians enter the stage, audiences and critics alike meet them with wild enthusiasm.
The Salzburger Nachrichten wrote, “A terrific achievement in musical performance and acting…” The British Bandsman stated, “An ensemble with a difference. This ensemble entertains audiences with a superb blend of virtuoso musicianship, unusual concert items, and off-beat humor. If you want to know what to expect, expect the unexpected.”
The Niederösterreichische Nachrichten in southern Austria said, “These musicians are absolutely brilliant on their instruments, which you almost don’t realize because you’re laughing so hard. This is supreme and high-quality entertainment.”
Tickets for the event are available now online at IUPTickets.com, by calling the Hadley Union Building box office at 724-357-1313, or by purchasing them at the Hadley Union Building on campus. Reserved tickets are $23 for regular admission, $18 for senior citizens, and $12 for students and children. The Lively Arts is produced by the College of Fine Arts and is funded, in part, by the IUP Student Cooperative Association in addition to a group of over forty local, regional, state, and national partners, including organizations, businesses, and institutions.
