Heide Wittöft, Department of Foreign Languages, presented a paper on “The Ultimate Outsider as Ultimate Insider: Jean-Baptiste Grenouille’s Path to Becoming One with Society in Patrick Süskind’s Das Parfum (The Perfume)” on March 8, 2013, at the Society for Interdisciplinary Study of Social Imagery (SISSI) conference in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The paper focused on Jean-Baptiste Grenouille’s outsider status on multiple levels: emotionally, physically, linguistically, olfactorily, professionally, intellectually, and morally. It analyzed how, despite social integration never being his ambition, in the end, Jean-Baptiste becomes one with society like few people ever do.
