The Lively Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present Sonny Landreth as a special community summer event. Performing an evocative and vibrant mixture of southwest Louisiana blues, the concert will be presented on Friday, May 31, 2013, at 8:00 p.m. in the Indiana Theater, located on Philadelphia Street in downtown Indiana.
The appearance of Sonny Landreth and his trio are being funded through a gift from David and Patty Bidwell.
Landreth is a guitarist's guitarist. His music encompasses Mississippi Delta blues, Zydeco, and Southern rock. He also creates sounds that are all his own—sounds he calls the “music behind the glass.”
Landerth is considered a wizard of the slide guitar. When using a slide, most guitarists rest it on the strings over the frets to create a quavering, fluid sound. They pluck the strings above the guitar's sound hole. But, in addition to finger-picking in a Chet Atkins style, Landreth also plays chords as he says, “On the ‘wild side’ of the slide,” up on to the neck of the guitar.
It’s been said that Landreth “can play it all.” His unique blues style can be found on his two Zoo Entertainment releases, Outward Bound (1992) and South of I-10 (1995). He can be heard on recordings by John Hiatt, Leslie West and Mountain, and other rock and rollers.
On his own, Landreth has released 11 CDs and in 2005 was recognized as the Americana Music Association’s Instrumentalist of the Year. His 2008 album, From the Reach, featured such guest stars as Eric Clapton, Vince Gill, and Jimmy Buffet. The album hit number one on Billboard's blues chart.
More recently, Landreth’s release of Elemental Journey is something very different from the Louisiana slide wizard. This latest recording is his first all-instrumental effort and his most adventurous work to date.
