Online Resources Replacing Printed Textbook

After a pilot program in 2012–2013, IUP English faculty professor John Hrebik is ready to ditch the traditional and expensive textbooks students are required to purchase.

Hrebik has designed his syllabus and course materials to take advantage of numerous online resources available to students for free. In addition to reducing college costs, students learn how to utilize these resources wherever and whenever they are writing.

“Printed textbooks can be great resources when writing as long as the books are readily available. By teaching students how to get the same help through online resources, students always have access to help wherever they are writing,” Hrebik said. “The most valuable resource in all of my writing classes is, no doubt, the unique experiences supplied by each of my students.”

During the Fall 2013 semester on the IUP at Northpointe campus, Hrebik will be teaching one section of ENGL 100: Basic Writing and two sections of ENGL 101: Composition I.

IUP at Northpointe applauds Hrebik’s dedication and creativity to not only lower the costs associated with attending college, but to do so in a manner that increases the long-term learning process of the student.
