Heide Witthöft, Department of Foreign Languages, published “The Ultimate Outsider as Ultimate Insider: Jean-Baptiste Grenouille’s Path to Becoming One with Society in Patrick Süskind’s Das Parfum (The Perfume)” in the Image of the Outsider III in Literature, Media, and Society.

The article analyzes how and why Jean-Baptiste Grenouille becomes an outsider, why he seeks this status for most of his life, and what traumatic event makes him decide to become part of society. It demonstrates how he succeeds and fails in this regard at the same time by becoming a true insider through sharing in multiple identities.
