Seven orchestra administrators between the ages of 25 and 35 will participate in the League of American Orchestras’ newly created Emerging Leaders Program. Two of the seven participants are alumni of IUP.

Participants were selected based on their overall leadership potential, and for their perceived capacity to make an even greater contribution to the organizations they currently serve and those they will serve in the future. They work in all areas of orchestra administration, including artistic, development, education and community engagement, and operations.

As an arts fundraising specialist, Jennifer Barton is the Individual Giving manager at the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and has also held positions at the Baltimore and Pittsburgh symphony orchestras. A pianist and graduate of IUP’s Robert E. Cook Honors College (BA Music, 2010), Barton attended the Essentials of Orchestra Management Seminar held by the League of American Orchestras in 2011 and has served on the board of the York County Honors Choirs in York, Pa.

Rebecca Zabinski currently serves as artistic associate at the Houston Symphony. Prior to 2009, when she joined the orchestra’s administrative staff, she was the operations and personnel intern at the Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival at the University of Houston. Zabinski holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Vocal Performance from IUP (2006).

The two-year intensive program combines on-the-job learning with strong mentoring and peer network-building opportunities. Michael Hood, dean of the College of Fine Arts, writes of the honor: “I am absolutely thrilled at the selection of not just one, but two of our Department of Music alumni as recipients of the inaugural League of American Orchestras Emerging Leaders program. What a testament to these wonderfully talented and hard-working young people, to their training, to the artistic and academic quality of the department, to the Cook Honors College, to the faculty, and to everything that IUP and IUP Music represent.”
