For the kickoff event to this year’s Ovations! series, the
Lively Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania is honored to host the return
of Grammy award-winning trumpeter and band leader, Doc Severinsen. The concert,
also presented in celebration of the Lively Arts’ 25th anniversary
season, will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher
This one-night only concert is filled with a variety of music
and performers that will make it a one-of-a-kind experience. Master showman
Severinsen will be joined by well-known Kansas City-based singer Vanessa
Thomas. And joining the duo will be the IUP Keystone Big Band. Composed of some
of IUP’s most accomplished alumni and faculty, all professional musicians, the
group will perform some premiere arrangements being composed just for this
performed at IUP in 1995 as the Helwig Distinguished Artist and shortly
following his 30-year career with Johnny Carson as music director for the
Tonight Show Band. For Doc’s
previous visit to Indiana, as many will recall, the concert included three
opening numbers with the IUP Jazz Ensemble that brought
the house down.
Severinsen has more than
30 albums to his credit, from big band to jazz-fusion to classical. Today, Doc has not lost his flair for
the outrageous fashion statement or his trademark wit. That remaining, his gregarious nature
has never interfered with the fact that he has been one of the greatest
trumpeters and musicians of the last 60 years, respected in the worlds of
classical music, jazz, big band, and now even world music. His remarkable ability to simply play
his trumpet as well as he can has obviously proven to be good enough for the
millions of people who count themselves as fans.
