The Sound Choices series, representing IUP Music
Department’s premier performances, will present the Litton Quartet on October 7,
2014, at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of John
The Litton, IUP’s resident faculty string quartet, will
perform its first concert of the new season. The program includes two of the most
experimental works of the Classic era, including Haydn’s op. 76 no.6 and
Beethoven’s op 95, “The Serioso.”
The Haydn work is the finale of his remarkable set
of six quartets making up opus 76. It includes a mysterious second
movement titled “Fantasia,” which explores wide ranging harmonies and
modulations not typical of Haydn’s time.
The Beethoven work gives us the first glimpse of
the composer’s transformation into his mystical, late period of composition.
The Litton will also perform two pieces by first
violinist Stanley Chepaitis from his ballet The
Ugly Duckling, which premiered in May 2014 with choreography by
