Amanda Poole, a faculty member in the Department of Anthropology, was invited to speak at a colloquium hosted at the University of Ottawa on the Future of Governance in Eritrea.

The colloquium, held October 1, 2014, involved over 25 regional and legal experts discussing contemporary and future political trends in Eritrea. Poole’s talk addressed natural resources and strategic assets relevant to long-term governance issues in the region.

Poole’s background in Eritrea began with Peace Corps service in 1997–98. She completed 15 months of fieldwork in Eritrea in 2004–05 on refugee resettlement and resource management.

Poole is currently researching changing state-society relations in light of out-migration. Her most recent article on Eritrea was published in 2014 in the edited volume Negotiating Territoriality: Spatial Dialogues between State and Tradition.
