In a preview of their performance as members of Strings and Serpents in Gorell Hall at 8:00 p.m.
on Wednesday evening, October 22, the ensemble’s
two Japanese koto players will present an outreach session in the
Stapleton Library commons area today from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. This is the first event of the partnership of the Lively Arts and the Mary Jane Schafer Memorial Fund.
IUP faculty, staff, students, and members of the community are invited enjoy lunch while listening to a few pieces on these unique Japanese instruments and to hear the two players talk about their backgrounds, koto music and its part in Japanese culture, and their involvement in Strings and Serpents. The session will be moderated by music librarian Carl Rahkonen and the arts-in-education coordinator for the Lively Arts, Jeff Wacker. Throughout the presentation, audience members are encouraged to ask questions of the two players, as well as the other members of Strings and Serpents who will be present.
