Recent Alumni/Faculty News

  • Scott D. Michaels (BS, 92) was promoted to full professor at the Biology Department, Indiana University. Scott is also director of the Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics.
  • Gregory Ferrence (BS 91), professor of chemistry at Illinois State University, served as the Committee on Ethics Chair of the American Chemical Society from 2012 to 2014. 
  • Rebecca Cerio (BS ’00) is now in the Office of Scientific Program and Policy Analysis of the National Institute of Diabetes and Kidney Disease. 
  • Sudipta Majumdar joined the IUP Chemistry Department faculty in August 2014. His research specializes in applied biochemistry.

Past Alumni/Faculty News

  • Abraham Badu-Tawiah (MS 10) has accepted a faculty position with the Chemistry Department, Ohio State University. Following his MS at IUP, Abraham earned his PhD from Purdue, under the direction of R. Graham Cooks, and did postdoctoral work with George Whitesides at Harvard University. 
  • Nicole Morozowich (BS ’08) received Penn States Alumni Association Dissertation Award in 2013 for her work on the design, synthesis, and evaluation of biomimetic polyphosphazenes for hard tissue engineering. This is one of the most prestigious awards given to Penn State graduate students. Nicole is now a senior research technologist at 3M.
  • Colin Ashe joined the faculty in August 2013. His research specializes in chemical education.
  • Sharon Sowa retired from IUP in May 2013.
  • Neil Asting, retired professor of chemistry, and his wife, Karen, died in a plane crash on April 1, 2013.
  • Nicholas Christodouleas, retired professor of chemistry, passed away on February 24, 2013.
  • John Woolcock, professor of chemistry, passed away on January 29, 2013.
  • Avijita Jain joined the faculty in August 2012. Her research specializes in biochemistry.
  • Matt Grata (BS ’11) visited the department with 11 students from his Chestnut Ridge High School class to see presentations, carry out an experiment, and present their own research to the department.
  • Michael Briggs retired from IUP in June 2012.
  • Roberta Eddy and ohn Wood retired from IUP in June 2011.
  • Laura Fox (BS ’11) entered the Chemistry PhD program at the University of Minnesota.
  • Deanna Belsky (BS ’11) entered the Molecular/Cell/Development Biology PhD program at Rockefeller University.
  • Madison Kendera (M.S. ’11) accepted a laboratory analyst position with Concurrent Technologies Corp.
  • Victoria Constant (BS ’11) accepted a position at Shadyside-Presbyterian Hospital.
  • James Shellhammer (BS ’11) entered into the Biological and Biomedical PhD program at UNC-Chapel Hill.
  • Jonathan Henninger (BS ’11) entered the Developmental and Regenerative Biology PhD program at Harvard.
  • Clinton Wilson (BS ’11) accepted a position with Lancaster Laboratories.
  • Andrea Strein (BS ’11) entered the Biotechnology MS program at Penn State.
  • James Zewe (BS ’11) entered the Biomedical PhD program at Pitt.
  • Maura Barrett (BS ’10) was accepted into the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh. She’ll be taking a summer class in epidemiology and starting the program in the fall. Congratulations, and good luck!
  • Dana (Phillips) McElroy (BS ’94) and Nate McElroy (BS ’94) are proud to announce the birth of their son, Aidan Finn McElroy, on Dec. 20, 2010.
  • Timothy Hays (former temporary faculty) was recently named as the E.A. Provine chair of the Department of Chemistry at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Ariz.
  • Brian McNaughton (BS ’01) completed his PhD at the University of Rochester, followed by a post-doctoral position at Harvard. He's now an assistant professor at Colorado State University.
  • Jonathan Licker (BS ’94) was selected as the 2009 Cornell University Young Alumni Award recipient.
  • Brian Stoltz (BS ’93) received a 2010 Tetrahedron Young Investigator Award.
  • Gregory Ferrence (BS ’91) was selected as the 2009 Illinois Professor of the Year.
