Michael Schwartz, assistant professor in the Theater and Dance Department, has written a chapter for the recently published book Play, Performance, and Identity: How Institutions Structure Ludic Spaces.
The book explores how people play and why play matters. Each of the chapters examines particular sites where people engage in playful activity.
Schwartz’s chapter, “Homo Ludens and the Sharks: Structuring Alternative Realities While Shark-Cage Diving in South Africa,” presents a look at a popular tourist activity in which he and his wife participated in 2007.
The book, part of the Routledge Advances in Theatre and Performance Studies series, was released at the end of February 2015 and is edited by Matt Omasata and Drew Chappell.
