In celebration of International Women’s Day, the Office of
International Education will sponsor the movie In Bloom on Thursday,
March 26, at 7:00 p.m. in Stouffer Auditorium.
The movie is directed by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon
Gross. It’s 1992, and Eka and Natia, two 14-year-old best friends,
live in a place that seems to be crumbling at the edge. Their homeland, the former Soviet Republic of
Georgia, is at war. The fighting in the
northern Abkhazia region is far from the capital, Tbilisi, where the girls
live, but the conflict pops up frequently in the adult conversations—at least
when the grown-ups are not screaming and cursing about other things.
premiered at the 63rd
Berlin International Film Festival, winning the C.I.C.A.E. Prize.
The film was selected as the Georgian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards.
