Dawn Smith-Sherwood, Department of Foreign Languages (Spanish), presented her essay “Memory, Exile, and Transnational Poetic Voice: Severo Sarduy’s Big Bang (1974)” at the 68th Kentucky Foreign Language Conference, celebrated April 23–25, 2015, at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

Her work, which formed part of the panel “Spain’s Futures: Memory, Imagination, and Migration in Spanish Transnational Texts,” treated part one, Flamenco, Sarduy’s poetic meditation on Spain’s Al-Andalus past and his own place as a Cuban in exile, in the history of Spanish letters.
