Broadway’s
award-winning hit Memphis the Musical comes
to IUP’s Performing Arts Center on Monday, May 4, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. Since opening
in 2010, it has received some of theater’s highest honors.
In
2010, Memphis was nominated for eight Tony Awards and won awards for:
- Best
Musical
- Best
Original Score
- Best
Book
- Best
Orchestrations
Memphis
the Musical was also nominated for seven Drama Desk Awards in 2010. The Drama
Desk Awards have been presented annually since 1955 to recognize excellence in
New York theater productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway.
Memphis was nominated for five awards, winning three:

- Outstanding
Orchestrations
This
year, the production opened a new production in London’s famous West End and
was nominated for eight Laurence Olivier Awards. The Laurence Olivier Awards
are the British equivalent of Broadway’s Tony Awards and are presented
annually by the Society of London Theatre to recognize excellence in professional
theater. Memphis was nominated for
four awards, winning two:
- Best
Choreography
- Best Sound Design
Also
in 2015, Memphis won Best New Musical
from London’s WhatsOnStage Awards. Nominations and winners of these
awards are selected by the theater-going public’s vote. The awards are held
each year at the Prince of Wales Theatre.
Memphis the Musical is on a national tour and is being
presented at IUP by the Lively Arts as the season finale to its 2014–15
Ovations! series.
