For the next installment to its
Ovations! series, the Lively Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will feature a performance by
CALJE, the Chicago Afro-Latin Jazz Ensemble. This international ensemble of gifted musicians will perform Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall.
CALJE, a new and innovative force on the Latin Jazz scene, fuses contemporary jazz with stimulating Afro-Latin rhythms. Incorporating traditional Cuban rhythms with modern Jazz harmony, CALJE has explored new music based on Tango, Merengue, Bomba y Plena, Flamenco, and Reggae.
With its culturally diverse background, CALJE is deeply committed to the evolution and preservation of Latin music. Artists in the band have had the opportunity to share the stage with legendary artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Chick Corea, The Temptations, Paquito D’Rivera,
and Danilo Perez.
CALJE has also performed and recorded with artists such as Grammy winners Howard Levy from the Bela Fleck Group, Brian Lynch from the Eddie Palmieri group, master percussionist Paoli Mejias, and legendary trombonist Steve Turre.
Founded in 2006 by Nicaraguan pianist/composer Darwin Noguera and Mexican trumpeter/composer Victor Garcia, these long-time musical collaborators envisioned an approach to Latin music that would follow in the innovative footsteps of the pioneering Cuban groups Chucho Valdes’ Irakere and the Dizzy Gillespie United Nations Orchestra.
This special engagement is presented as part of IUP’s recognition of International Education Week and Hispanic Heritage Month, with planning through the cooperation of the Office of International Education and African American Cultural Center.
