Andrew
Melhorn ('08) visited the IUP campus and the Eberly
College of Business and Information Technology on November 8-9 to attend
events related to the Office of Alumni Affairs Young Alumni Achievement Awards
(YAAA) program.
As
a former marketing major at IUP, Melhorn served as the President of the Student
Marketing Association (SMA), and he also interned with a large pharmaceuticals
sales company. He played men’s ice hockey
for two years and coached the IUP women’s ice hockey team for three years. Melhorn received the 2008 award for Service
Excellence from the Marketing Department, and he was also involved in Phi Beta
Lambda, the Student Finance Association, and the College of Business Advisory
Council.
After
graduating in 2008, Melhorn moved to Baltimore to work in fleet transportation
sales, and he later moved back into medical sales in the Tampa Bay, Fla., area. He is currently a senior account manager and field sales trainer for Smith & Nephew Advanced Wound Management.
While
visiting Sunday night, Melhorn attended the Young Alumni Networking Dinner
hosted by the IUP Ambassadors. IUP students were able to spend time networking
with the awardees and obtain advice regarding their respective career
paths.
On
Monday, in addition to meeting with the current SMA student president, Melhorn
gave presentations to students in various marketing and business core classes
about sales and personal selling. Students
enjoyed learning about various issues related to sales and about the medical industry.
Katie
Fox, junior marketing major and alumni ambassador, appreciated Melhorn’s
presentations.
“It
was so great to have a sales professional back in Eberly to speak to the
current marketing students,” she said. “I think he really opened up our minds
to sales and different industries, as well as staying positive and being
yourself in the interview process.”
The
YAAA reception was held in the Sutton Hall Blue Room, where recipients
representing all six colleges gathered with their families, IUP administration
and the ambassador hosts. The awardees were also given time to thank their
family, friends and mentors who have helped them accomplish their goals.
"I
feel honored and I am humbled to have been nominated to receive the Young
Alumni Achievement Award for the Eberly College of Business for 2015”, Melhorn
said. “Knowing the caliber of highly educated and talented business
professionals which the Eberly College of Business develops each year makes
this award much more special. The early success I have had in my career is a
direct reflection of the professional leadership I had learned during my time
at IUP. Thank you to all of those who have directly shaped, molded and guided
me. I am proud to call Indiana University of Pennsylvania my alma mater.”
