Theater-by-the-Grove at Indiana University of Pennsylvania
will present the Eugene O’Neill American classic, The Hairy Ape. Performances will be held February 18–20 and 24–27 at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, February 21 at 2:00 p.m. Performances will take
place on the Waller Hall Mainstage of IUP’s Performing Arts Center.
The Hairy Ape is
O’Neill’s expressionistic examination of modern American life in the 1920s
during the rise of corporations and machines. A brutish stoker named Yank leads a happy, animal-like existence on a luxury
liner as long as he is working
with the coal and fires below deck.
When he has a chance encounter with an out-of-her-element
rich girl, Yank is forced to question his identity and his life. He sets off to
get revenge on the girl for the perceived insult while simultaneously trying to
answer the question, “Where do I belong?” The answers Yank gets on his journey lead simultaneously to comedy and tragedy.
