Joann Migyanka, associate professor in the Department of Communication Disorders, Special Education, and Disability Services, was recently interviewed by Kaiser Health News about her work to improve the emergency room experience for people with autism.
Hospitals across the country are
recognizing the growing need to train personnel and improve the quality
of care for patients with autism spectrum disorders. In order to achieve this, they are
implementing accommodations and revamping treatment protocols.
Migyanka and her collaborative partner, Arvind Venkat, an emergency
department physician at Allegheny General Hospital, have developed
training materials for hospital personnel. They were interviewed for
CNN.com regarding the need for such training.
