The second seminar of the Research
Experience for Summer Scholars (RESS) program took place Friday,
June 24, in 240 Weyandt Hall, with a presentation from Derek Hanely, an RESS scholar and IUP applied
mathematics major.
Derek is working under the direction of Rachelle Bouchat
during the 10-week summer program.
Seminar Title:
Exploring the Double-Critical Graph Conjecture
Abstract:
A simple, connected graph
G is said to be double-critical if removing any pair of adjacent vertices
lowers the chromatic number, χ, by exactly two. In 1966, Paul Erdős and László
Lovász proposed the double-critical graph conjecture which states that the
complete graph on n vertices is the only simple, connected graph with chromatic
number n such that it is a double-critical graph. This result has been proven
for the case where χ(G) = 5, but it has yet to be shown for general n. The
mathematical concepts related to this problem will be explored, and ensuing
discussion of my preliminary work and future direction involving the
construction of a computer program for analyzing general graphs will be
covered.
About the Research
Experience for Summer Scholars (RESS) Program
The IUP College of Natural Science
and Mathematics’ RESS program provides IUP students research experiences in
their field of study though hands on research with one-on-one faculty
engagement. The program fosters student professional development with events
that promote growth with workshops, networking, and the presenting scientific
work. The summer’s events are capped with a world-class keynote speaker and
poster session in August. This year, we are happy to host our keynote speaker,
Anne Jefferson.
Questions about the RESS program can be directed to Justin Fair
at j.fair@iup.edu.
