CMS Tip: Use QuickLinks, Not Aliases

This is part of a series of tips for web maintainers. The Web Team posts hints and tips about the CMS, MyIUP, IUP Mobile, and the interactive map each week.

When making links on the CMS, choose the /WorkArea QuickLink to ensure that links to IUP webpages won’t break.

Choose the Right Option

Always choose the /WorkArea option when making a quicklink.QuickLinks use the content ID of the linked page, which does not change. A page's alias, however (such as www.iup.edu/web/) might change at some point, and any links leading to it would then break. QuickLinks do not use the alias, and so will always work.

Whenever you see the option to use an alias as a QuickLink, don’t choose it. Instead, always choose the option that starts with /WorkArea.

Always use the library (blue book) icon whenever quicklinking to any IUP webpage. Using that icon adds necessary code that is not visible in the URL. For that reason, never type nor copy and paste an IUP web address.

Choose from !PageLayouts

When quicklinking to an IUP site that has been converted to the new website design, you must link to the page within the “!Page Layouts” set of folders. When quicklinking to an IUP site that has been converted to the new website design, you must link to the page within the “!Page Layouts” set of folders. The Page Layout folders contain the actual web pages. Linking to what is in the content (original) folders will only display isolated text completely out of context to the website.

The main page of a converted website is located within the main !Page Layouts folder, not in the top-level website folder.
