Amanda PooleAmanda Poole, Department of Anthropology, was invited by the U.S. State Department to speak at an Analytic Exchange on Eritrea in Washington, D.C. on August 17, 2016.

Poole addressed issues related to Eritrean refugees, placing the current wave of outmigration in a regional, historical, and socio-political context. It is estimated that as many as half a million Eritreans are now refugees, making the country of 6 million people one of the largest refugee producing nations in the world.

An anthropologist with expertise in the Horn of Africa, Poole will spend a month this September in Ethiopia researching the care of Eritrean refugee youth and the efficacy of programs designed to curb secondary migration.
