September is National Preparedness Month. Take time to prepare now and throughout the year for emergencies that could affect you where you visit, work, and live.

Each week throughout September, the IUP Police will highlight a theme to help you plan and prepare.

Week 4: Individual Preparedness

What can you do to be prepared for emergencies?

  • Be aware of your specific needs: medications, water, snacks, extra change of clothing/shoes, contact solution/eye glasses, first aid kit, flashlight (think if you have to shelter in place)
  • Equip your vehicle with an extra change of clothing, first aid kit
    • For inclement weather: shovel, blankets, gloves, boots (think if you would get stuck)
  • Backup power needs for your electronic devices: power cords, batteries, chargers
  • Think of your pets and their needs: food, water, blankets, meds, etc.
  • Know what your insurance policy covers before an emergency
  • Be connected to the Emergency Alerts where you take classes, work, and where you live
  • Know evacuation/exit routes: at your office, in an academic building, in a store, in a hotel/motel etc.
