The Refugee Working Group, comprised of IUP faculty, Indiana community members, and others from the region, is sponsoring a three-part workshop, “Crossing Borders: Issues and Consequences for Refugees,” to take place Thursday, November 3, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the HUB Monongahela and Susquehanna Rooms.
In Session 1 from 3:30 to 4:20, “Displacement: An Overview,” the audience will learn the differences among refugees, asylum seekers, and similar categories. This session will be led by Safe Saracoglu, an associate professor of history at Bloomsberg University.
Following that session will be an intermission from 4:30 to 5:15, facilitated by Susan Dawkins, during which participants can learn about the refugee resettlement process through an interactive activity titled “Refugee Pathways.”
In the final session at 5:15, IUP graduate student Nashwan Abdullah will discuss “Media (Mis)Representation of the Syrian Conflict.” He will discuss his experience and then talk via Skype with a reporter in Syria.
