Leading into the holiday season, the Lively Arts will welcome living jazz legend Diane Schuur on its
Ovations! series. The concert is set for Friday, December 9, 2016, at 8:00 p.m.
in Fisher Auditorium of the IUP Performing Arts Center.
“I Remember You” is the theme for her program, which draws
on the music of Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz, and other gems. Through these standards of the great
American songbook, her singing and piano playing conjures the emotions that
burn in our hearts, wild romance, and the thirst for love and happiness. Schuur embraces this music with artistic integrity and deep respect for the lyrics,
giving true meaning to the elegance and swing of Sinatra and Getz, both of whom
were personal champions in her impressive career.
In addition to these standards and a few holiday hits with
her trio, Schuur will also be joined by the IUP Jazz Ensemble for a couple
Schuur is considered one of contemporary jazz’s leading
vocalists, noted for her expressive and powerful voice. Born blind, her spirit
and life is shown through her passion in her work. Both of her parents embraced
jazz, supporting her as a pianist and collector of various jazz records. She later
attributed the true “discovery” of her musical talents to Stan Getz, who heard
one of her performances and invited her to perform at the White House, leading to
an impressive list of venues from Carnegie Hall to Sesame Street.
Performing and expanding her career for more than three
decades, Schuur has been awarded two Grammy awards along with three additional
nominations. Her appearances have resulted in highly successful recordings,
often landing herself at the number one spot on the Billboard Chart.
Her performances have complemented various popular and
renowned artists, including Barry Manilow, B.B. King, the Count Basie Orchestra, Stevie
Wonder, and many others, all contributing to her still-growing popularity.
As part of her visit, Schuur will lead a rehearsal with the
IUP Jazz Ensemble as well as host a question-and-answer session with IUP
students. Area high school music teachers and their students have also been
invited to this session.
