As part of the JFK Centennial Celebration recognizing Freedom, Courage, Justice, Service, and Gratitude, the 2016–17 season Department of Theater and Dance production of We are Proud to Present... was recognized “For insisting that theatrical production is central to the urgent community, national, and international conversations on the campuses of higher education nationwide.”
Professor Nancy Pipkin-Hutchinson, vice chair for Design/Technology/Management in Region 2 of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, presented this award to the Department of Theater and Dance at the weekly practicum meeting.
The Department of Theater and Dance originally selected the production of We are Proud... to rise to the challenge to hold courageous conversations about race set forth by President Michael Driscoll for the 2016–17 academic year. The production was subsequently chosen for further presentation at the Region 2 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival held in January 2017.
The Department of Theater and Dance at IUP provides leadership and participates highly in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Each year, student actors, directors, designers, stage managers, dramaturgs, and playwrights from IUP come together at a regional festival with over 1,000 peers from more than 50 universities in our eight-state region.
In January 2018, IUP will host the KCACTF Festival from January 16 to 20.
