IUP Punxsutawney held its first Welcoming Event, hosted by the IUP Punxsutawney Welcome Wagon, on Monday, October 9, 2017. The purpose of the event was to make the students feel welcome in the community and allow them the opportunity to see what local businesses, organizations, and services are available to them.

The IUP Welcome Wagon is a group of volunteers from Punxsutawney. Mary Jude Troupe, along with her committee, organized the event.

There were 22 vendors, including churches, restaurants, bakeries, organizations, and health care services on campus to welcome the students to Punxsutawney and provide them with information about what our community has to offer.  There were food samples, give-a-ways, activities, and prize drawings.

This event provided the IUP Academy of Culinary Arts students the opportunity to meet with organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Salvation Army. Community service is a mandatory requirement of the culinary program. Several businesses were offering employment opportunities to students who may be interested.

To encourage participation, the sociology and psychology professors at IUP Punxsutawney tied the event into their lesson plans to help promote professional networking and social skills.

The IUP Welcome Wagon hopes to host at least four events throughout the year.
