Amanda Poole, Anthropology professor, presented a paper on refugee policy in Ethiopia at the African Studies Association Annual Conference.

Co-written with Jennifer Riggan of Arcadia University, the paper was titled “Refugee Management as Statemaking in Ethiopia” and was presented on a panel titled “New Directions in Ethiopian Studies.”

This paper drew from ongoing ethnographic research on refugee policy in Ethiopia to explore the ways in which Ethiopia is central to new processes of “humanitarian borderwork” through their role as one of the largest refugee hosting states in Africa. The African Studies Association Annual Conference took place in Chicago November 16–8, 2017.
