IUP Percussion Ensemble Takes on Fisher

On Saturday, April 14, 2018, the IUP Percussion Ensemble comes out in full force to present its Spring Concert in Fisher Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The joint venture between Musical Director Michael Kingan and Technical Director David Surtasky has attracted sizable audiences since 2014.

Fall 2018 Percussion EnsembleThis year, IUP PE is joined by special guests: the Norwin HS Percussion Ensemble, directed by IUP percussion alumnus Brandon Kandrack; and the Leechburg MS/HS Percussion Ensemble and Taiko Group, directed by Rob Reams, also an IUP percussion alumnus.

The program features a variety of contemporary percussion ensemble pieces, two of which are composed or arranged by IUP alumnus Vince Wallace and Chris Leidhecker. World percussion pieces with influences from Africa, Brazil, Trinidad, Japan, Cuba, and Polynesia will also be enjoyed as well, including a world premiere by current grad student Rob Lawson. Two featured performers are Will King (marimba) and Ed Dunlap (African Gyil).

  • “El Caribe” by Lalo Davila (Leechburg MS/HS Percussion Ensemble)
  • “Kpanlogo” — Traditional African drumming piece featuring Ed Dunlap
  • “Sonhando em Salvador” by Julie Hill (IUP Samba Line)
  • “Arashi” arranged by Pittsburgh Taiko (Leechburg Taiko Group)
  • “Rosanna”by Toto, arranged by alumnus Chris Leidhecker
