The cover story of the spring 2018 edition of IUP Magazine carried a story about how members of the IUP community are tackling the opioid crisis.

Erick Lauber, Victor Garcia, Melissa Swauger, and Alex Heckert from the Mid-Atlantic Research and Training Institute for Community and Behavioral Health (MARTI-CBH) were interviewed for the story, as were John Lewis and Eric Kocian from the IUP Criminology and Criminal Justice Department.

Lauber, Garcia, Swauger, and Heckert discussed the plans that MARTI-CBH has for combating the growing health crisis. The researchers made note of their hopes of gaining an understanding of where the opioid epidemic in Western Pennsylvania has stemmed from, developing enhanced training for those working in the addiction counseling fields, and raising public awareness of the seriousness of the issue.

Lewis and Kocian, having conducted a study together in the past, discussed their findings about heroin use in relation to the age of initial drug introduction. They also mentioned the implications that widespread drug use has on law enforcement.
