Vicente Gomis-Izquierdo, Department of Foreign Languages, published the article “‘Los grandes crímenes menudean:’ El crimen de la calle de Fuencarral y sus implicaciones sociales” in the journal Siglo XIX.

The article uses the well-known “crime of Fuencarral street” as the basis to compare different accounts of the same crime and explain how those accounts reflect specific attitudes towards gender and class when it came to crime. Thus, using Galdós’s letters to an Argentinian newspaper and the accounts of three different Spanish newspapers, as well as texts from known criminologists of the period, it explores how these narratives offer clues as to how perceived gender and class attitudes shaped society’s perceptions of crime.
