Join the Lively Arts at IUP this weekend as they kick off
the Ovations! Series with a very special performance from the Pittsburgh
Symphony Orchestra. The concert will
feature this year’s Helwig Distinguished Artist, violinist Pinchas Zukerman,
and will be presented Saturday, September 29, at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium
of the IUP Performing Arts Center.
Patrons are encouraged to purchase their tickets for the
performance in person at the box office prior to the day of the show to avoid a
$3/ticket fee. For an additional savings
of $5/ticket, patrons may use the discount code “PSO5OFF.”
Prior to the concert, “Meet the Maestros,” a free Q&A session sponsored by
IUP’s Music Department and Lively Arts, will take place
from 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, September 29, in DiCicco Hall (Rm. 121) of
Cogwell Hall. This event is open to the
public and will feature the music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony
Orchestra, Maestro Manfred Honeck, and guest soloist, the world-renowned
violinist Pinchas Zukerman, the 2018–19 Helwig Distinguished Artist. It will be moderated by IUP music faculty
member and applied violin and viola professor Colleen Ferguson.
Following the concert, the audience is invited to a free
post-show reception in the Crimson Café, sponsored by IUP Dining.
The orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Manfred
Honeck, will open the concert with Beethoven’s only opera, Overture to Fidelio, Opus 72. Zukerman will join the orchestra for
Max Bruch’s masterful Concerto No. 1 in G
Minor for Violin and Orchestra, Opus 26. In the second half, the orchestra
will close the concert with Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 in D major, Opus 73.

The appearance of Pinchas Zukerman with the Pittsburgh
Symphony is funded, in part, by the Helwig Distinguished Artist Endowment,
established in 1988 by the late Florence L. Helwig in memory of her husband,
Wilfred E. Helwig. The endowment and the Helwig family have supported the
appearance of 18 different performing artists since that time.
The Ovations! Series is funded, in part, by donations through
the Premiere Club, business sponsorships, grants, and the IUP Student
Cooperative Association. The Lively Arts, a program of the College of Fine
Arts, presents nearly 200 performances, programs, and exhibits annually.
