The Kipp Gallery at Indiana University of Pennsylvania
continues its 2018–19 season on Tuesday, October 16, with the opening of the
exhibit, “Andy Byers: The One Who Sleeps
on His Breath.” An opening reception is scheduled at 5:00 p.m. with an artist
talk beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Kipp Gallery, located on the first floor of
Sprowls Hall on the campus of IUP.
Artist Andy Byers will present a multi-disciplinary
show with works in sculpture, photography, costume design, film, and
performance. “The One Who Sleeps On His Breath” investigates the life of artist
and photographer Edward S. Curtis as well as Byers’ own life and practices,
exploring the relationship between that which is seen and that which lies in
the shadows. Through the performative aspects of fabrication and the dance
between the mind’s eye and the capacity of the artist’s hand, these works seek
to evoke and raise to the surface an inner mystery.
Using the medium of film to explore his personal
spirituality and capturing it through the lens of the camera, Byers takes on
both the role of Edward Curtis in his search for the Great Mystery as well as
the artist’s journey into what it means to connect to something greater than
oneself. By utilizing personal symbols,
the role of the spirit animal and his world of fantasy, Byers intertwines his
own work and passions with those of Edward Curtis to investigate how art can
open the doors of perception to healing.
In addition to the show at Kipp Gallery, Byers has created a
feature-length film that will premiere on the night of the opening. The screening of The One Who Sleeps On His
Breath will be followed by a lecture by the artist on the works and film.
Admission is free. The exhibit is open to the public in the Kipp Gallery, Sprowls Hall,
beginning Monday, October 15, and will be on display until Monday, November 12,
2018. The reception and artist talk are
scheduled for Tuesday, October 16, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. (with the artist talk
starting at 6:00 p.m.).
Kipp Gallery hours are Tuesday–Friday, noon–4:00 p.m. Closed Sunday,
