Janet Walker of the Mathematical and Computer Sciences Department and her former student, Bridget Scanga, BSEd Secondary Mathematics Education ’19, published “Problem Solving the Hungarian Way and Problem Solving the Hungarian Way—Part II” in the Ohio Journal of School Mathematics.
In summer 2018, Bridget had the opportunity to study abroad as a student in the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics Education program. The program focuses on the work of Lajos Pósa, one of the most prominent mathematics educators in Hungary. These two papers present strategies that were posed during the workshop, both with different tasks and goals.
The first article was published in the spring 2019 issue of Ohio Journal of School Mathematics, and Part II of the article was published in the fall 2019 issue.
Scanga is currently a teacher at Patterson Mill High School in the Hartford County (Maryland) Public School District.
Walker received her PhD in Mathematics Education from Oregon State University. She is currently the co-coordinator for the Secondary Mathematics Education program at IUP. Walker teaches undergraduate mathematics courses, undergraduate mathematics education courses, and graduate mathematics education courses and supervises student teachers.
