Actors from Aquila Theatre will work with students from the IUP Department of Theatre, Dance, and
Performance in a Physical Theatre Masterclass from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on
Friday, November 15. The class precedes the company's 8:00 p.m. performance in Fisher Auditorium of Michael Gene Sullivan's stage adaptation of George Orwell's masterpiece, 1984.
"This is a great opportunity for our students to work with members of such a renowned theatre company," said the department's head of Acting and Directing, Richard Kemp. "Aquila Theatre now has a nearly 20-year history of bringing classical drama of the highest quality to audiences in New York and around the country, but giving each work a very bold reinterpretation."
“What's great about this masterclass," he continued, "is that by Aquila sharing some of their rituals in the form of movement and vocal exercises, our students really have the opportunity to explore the company's very imaginative and physical resources that they use to create their own unique theatrical style.”
The chair of the department, Brian Jones, said that masterclass is important for two reasons. “One, our students get an in-person taste of the opportunities that are available after they graduate; and two, that they see an example of others who are working so successfully in the field, give back to the next generation.”
He continued, “We're so appreciative to the Kristen Koehler and the Lively Arts for bringing Aquila to Indiana as part of their nationwide tour, and for ensuring that opportunities such as this masterclass are available to our students.”
