April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month

As part of this Awareness Month, the Haven Project and the IUP and Indiana communities take part in Take Back the Night, a march through IUP campus to show support for victims and survivors of sexual violence.

In many situations, violence occurs at night and, as a result, many people stay home out of fear. Every spring, the Haven Project coordinates its largest event with a gathering of over a thousand people, including students, staff, faculty, and Indiana residents. Participants, often carrying anti-violence signs and chanting anti-violence and empowerment messages, march through the IUP campus and the Indiana community.

This march is held in an effort to end violence and send the message that victims and survivors will no longer remain fearful and secluded in their homes. This worldwide initiative has a long and proud history of supporting survivors while trying to prevent violence. Anyone can participate in Take Back the Night marches in their communities. To find out more about the history of Take Back the Night and about upcoming events, or to get valuable resources, please visit the Take Back the Night website.

IUP’s Take Back the Night March is followed by a powerful survivor speak-out, which offers survivors of violence an opportunity to give voice to their experiences. Some share their stories or provide support to others, while publicly affirming their transition from victim to survivor. It is a powerful and empowering event for both survivors and supporters. The speak-out is an inseparable and vital part of IUP’s experience of Take Back the Night and brings awareness to others about the impact of sexual assault and violence on victims and survivors. The Just Paws Therapy Dogs will also be there to support students during the Speak Out.
