IUP String Project students Maddie Faulkner and Anna Shyrock participated in the National String Project Consortium Virtual Orchestra performance of Brian Balmages’ piece Greater Than … created this year to celebrate the NSPC’s 20th anniversary.
Maddie Faulkner, cellist and 10th grade student at Indiana High School, and Anna Shyrock, cellist and 8th grade student in the PA Cyber School, recorded their parts of the piece in December 2019. Their performances were then combined with recordings of string players from other String Projects across the United States to create one large virtual orchestra.
The NPSC commissioned Brian Balamages, one of the leading composers for string educational works, to create Greater Than … for this project. This work included different levels of string parts to accommodate beginner to advanced levels of students. The orchestra was conducted by Robert Jesselson, founder and former executive director of the NSPC. For more information on the NSPC and the creation of the NSPC 20th Anniversary Virtual Orchestra, watch this YouTube video.
The National String Project Consortium, a coalition of String Project sites based at colleges and universities across the Unites States, is dedicated to increasing the number of children playing stringed instruments and addressing the critical shortage of string teachers in the Unites States. The IUP String Project, begun in 2004 by IUP Music Department professor Linda Jennings, continues to bring these national initiatives to Western Pennsylvania.
Congratulations to Maddie and Anna for representing the IUP String Project in this national project!
