A trumpet ensemble from IUP will be competing in the semifinals of the trumpet ensemble division at the National Trumpet Competition in Fairfax, Va., at George Mason University. The group, comprised of Andy Giles, John Powlison, Jim Johnson, Willis Spencer, and Jeremy Hetrick, will perform on Thursday, March 11, 2010, for a panel of nationally recognized judges. They will be performing “Cityscapes” by Eric Morales.

The National Trumpet Competition takes place each year in Fairfax. Competition areas include the Trumpet Ensemble division, Jazz division, and Solo divisions for graduate, undergraduate, high school, and junior high students. Last year, IUP student John Powlison won third place in the undergraduate division. The entire competition takes place March 11–14 this year. In addition to those competing, twenty-five trumpet students will be attending the competition and participating in clinics and master classes as well as a mass trumpet ensemble.

The students study with IUP Department of Music faculty members Dr. Kevin Eisensmith and Dr. David Ferguson. Dr. Ferguson conducts the Trumpet ensemble.
